Is there anything quite like a Stella McCartney collection on the runway? As a designer or a stylist, you can aim at purity and simplicity in the look, but end up with a heavy-handed, austere revelation, more somber than current economy. Or you can be Stella. Her code is neither Puritan strictness, nor strained primitivism that will make you yawn. And it’s not even their opposite — cloying naivety. None of that in there! So what is it?

It is something else entirely! Maybe it’s naivety, but not of the saccharine kind. And maybe it’s minimalism, but one that brings delight and ease. Maybe it’s all of those things, with a mix of wondrous non-Puritan purity. The bottom line is: according to Stella, simplicity doesn’t have to be a heavy burden to carry.

Stella launched a lingerie line last year. So what? — you may think. Maybe she is original in clothing, but there is no threat for gloom and austerity in lingerie. (Except for some S&M references in Agent Provocateur, but even that is playful). So, you decide, I’ll appreciate her for what she is — another beautiful and expensive line at Bergdorf’s.

Beautiful and expensive it is. But more than that. Lingerie (as you well know) can speak volumes, and the volume doesn’t have to be sex. Or, at least it does not have to convey sex so directly. Or abruptly. Or in your face. Also, as you well know, there is a kind of teasing that’s not all by lace and frills. And (this is something Stella taught us) lingerie can be refined, but the refinement does not have to be merely in the materials (think gorgeous I.D. Sarrieri lace) – it will be in the idea. Stella succeeds with that. Her line of lingerie is about ideas. What ideas? Yes, that evasive kind of purity and simplicity we all crave.

So here is another bottom line. If you are of the sophisticated sort but you often need some room to breathe, you’ve found your lingerie ally. You won’t have to carry all that weight.
